Should I Wash My Hair Before My Color Service?

Should I Wash My Hair Before My Color Service.jpg

We have clients come in almost daily and ask if they should wash their hair before highlighting or coloring. If you’re coming in to get your color done, it’s better to leave your hair dirty ( the second day, the third day is fine). It makes it easier for our stylists to place foils in your hair and the color actually holds better to dirty hair due to clean hair being too slippery. Clean hair will prevent the color from properly absorbing into the hair’s cuticle. Also, the natural oils help protect your scalp from possible irritation the color could cause.

There are some exceptions to the “no shampoo rule”. Such as, if you go swimming in a chlorinated pool the day of your color appointment, you must shampoo the chlorine out or there could be some funky results when the color reacts with the chlorine! Or, if you work out hard before a color service, wash your hair. Excessively oily hair lifts poorly, processes slowly, and doesn’t color well. You should also make sure any cover-up products or dry shampoos you use to disguise your roots between services are out before you get to our salon.

These can create barriers which the color won’t be able to penetrate well through. Hairspray can be brushed out before the service, and most non-oily products are fine. Styling products are generally okay unless you used an excessive amount. If you have to shampoo before your visit to our salon before highlighting or coloring, always come with dry hair. While color takes fine of damp hair, damp hair pulls a lot when your sectioning and you will be much more comfortable with a dry head of hair.

3 Things You Need To Know About The Strands Of Your Hair

3 Things You Need To Know About Your Strands Of Hair - Best of Westchesster - NY hair salon.JPG

Today, we would like to share a brief lesson on hair to help our clients obtain a better understanding of the strands that make up our crowning glory, why we think organic beats traditional shampoo, and a list of ingredients you should avoid when purchasing for your precious locks.

Understanding the strands of hair

Hair has three main components: It’s made of protein (mainly a kind called keratin) along with natural oils that keep hair flexible and water. The outside, or the part that everyone sees, is called the cuticle and is made of five to ten, overlapping layers of protein like shingles on a roof. These protect what’s underneath, which is the middle section called the cortex. The cortex holds long bundles of proteins that give hair its strength and keep it from breaking. And at the center is an empty zone called the medulla that helps insulate the hair. Not all hair has the medulla. It’s usually found in coarse, dark hair.

When it comes to hair products, the most important part is the cuticle. When the layers of protein lie smoothly against each other, hair looks shiny and smooth. Everyday things, like brushing and washing hair, makes the cuticle stand up straight. That makes it frizzy and more prone to breaking and split ends. One of the most damaging things for hair is a simple wash and dry because the water swells the hair and messes up the cuticle.

Organic beats traditional shampoo

Unlike traditional shampoos, Organic shampoos won't irritate and dry out your scalp because they are soft and gentle. Lack of chemicals means that your hair won't be damaged or dried out. If you have colored hair, natural shampoo is safe to use for you because it doesn't strip color, and can actually make it look more radiant. All the nutrients, vitamins, and oils in organic shampoos will provide the nourishment your hair needs, making it healthy and beautiful. They are absolutely safe to use, so you don't need to be worried about ingesting harmful chemicals into your body and skin.

The fantastic smelling foam we all love so much that lathers up our hair actually contains many harmful ingredients such as sulfate, alcohol, silicone, parabens, and even traces of anti-freeze. Organic shampoos don't have the chemicals present in traditional shampoos. They contain natural ingredients like proteins, essential oils, vitamins, fruit extracts and so much other goodness. These ingredients in themselves are amazing nutrients for your hair. Natural shampoos also don't have the SLS ingredient, which means that they don't lather up as well. Don't worry, this doesn't mean that they don't clean your hair just as well. Simply give an extra rinse, and your hair will be just as clean and shiny as ever.

Here is a main list of ingredients you should avoid:

  • Alcohol (if listed as one of the first four ingredients)
  • Sodium Laureth sulfate
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
  • Ammonium lauryl sulfate
  • Diethanolamine (DEA)
  • Triethanolamine (TEA)
  • Parabens
  • Polyethylene glycol
  • Synthetic Fragrance/Parfum
  • Propylene Glycol (aka anti-freeze)
  • Dimethicone
  • Formaldehyde
  • Petrolatum
  • Siloxanes (ending in -siloxane or -methicone)

5 Ways to Prep for Your Hair and Makeup Trial

wedding girls brides hairstyles and makeups-best of westchester county ny.jpeg

Hair and makeup may be one of the last things you think of when planning your wedding, but it can also be one of the most nerve-wracking (you definitely want to love your look). It’s best to have your trial about six months prior to your wedding day so you have time to get used to it and make changes if you need. To make sure you get the most out of your trial, follow the five steps below.

1. Bring Your Makeup Bag

If there's a foundation that sits well on your skin or a certain product you wear every single day, show it to your makeup artist. The artist may do a beautiful job with their products, but if you don't feel like yourself, you won’t be 100 percent comfortable with your look. For the day of, share this tip with any bridesmaids who are nervous about getting their makeup done or have sensitive skin.

2. Find Inspirational Photos of Hair and Makeup

It may be hard to figure out the exact look you want for your special day so I suggest creating an inspiration board of hair and makeup. Do you gravitate toward whimsical, textured looks or more chic, structured updos? By showing your stylists what you like about each photo, they’ll be able to understand your preferences without your needing to know all the terminology. This is one instance when showing is probably easier than telling. Just keep in mind that if you like something in photos, but don't like it on yourself, that's totally fine (and what your trial is for).

3. Take Note of What You Didn’t Like About Past Looks

Another helpful way for you to communicate what you’re looking for is to describe what you don’t want. Have you been to a wedding party where you disliked how you looked? Tell the stylists why you felt that way. If your stylists know what to stay away from, your trial will be so much more efficient—you won’t need to wait until each look is finished to figure out what you don't like.

4. Arrive With a Clean Face and Hair

This one’s simple—in order to find that perfect look, get to your appointment with clean hair and no makeup so your pros can start with a blank canvas.

5. Purchase Accessories and Hair Extensions Beforehand

Take a look at the hair and makeup photos you like. Inspired by photos of hairstyles with long, thick hair? If your hair is thin, short or doesn't hold curls well, consider investing in clip-in extensions. These easily blend into your own hair and help create a fuller look. If there’s a certain hair accessory you plan to incorporate, definitely bring that along. If not, once you decide on the look during your trial, you can easily pick up a hairpiece afterward—just let your hairstylist know if you plan to wear a hair accessory so they can think about how to incorporate it into your style.

Hair Vitamins and Shakes, They Actually Work

Hair Vitamins and Shakes

Why Hair Loss Vitamins?

Our hair vitamins were developed with the maximum amount per serving of essential minerals and B-supplements. These include Biotin( Vitamin H) and Niacin ( B3) for the essential fast revitalization of the hair follicle.

The proper ratio of B supplements with Iodine and Zinc and natural botanicals such as Pumpkin seed, Silica, and Foti provide the essential nutrients for your follicles to maintain a well balanced daily nutrition essential for the root. These promote healthy follicles and will restore dull, lifeless thin. Nourish your scalp from within with our nutritional tablets. Physician developed and recommended.

What are the most important supplements to restore hair?

Vitamin B  is a group of natural substances that when dosed properly such as Biotin (Vit B7/Vit H) and Niacin (Vit B3) are necessary for proper scalp nutrition. To maintain healthy, full, long locks with less shedding and breakage you need to provide the nutrients your roots need with a well-balanced diet with these essential compounds for the hair follicle. These work to increase the anagen phase which is the growing phase of the follicle. By taking these daily they will promote healthy scalp and maximize the longest, thickest and fastest possible anagen phase.

Which hair vitamin for men prevent male pattern baldness?

A hair vitamin with the proper ratio of B vit, Zinc, Mg, and chinese herbs such as Foti and Pumpkin seed will help nourish the scalp from the root, restore and prevent baldness and change the existing follicle from minaturizing or catagen into the anagen phase or elongation. With men, the androgen hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can cause male pattern baldness and another hormone that Dr. Shapiro has researched in his published paper, called IGF-1, can prevent follicle expansion by increasing a molecule called TGF-B3. TGF-B3  which affects the length and width of the shaft and the supply of nutrients to the minaturized follicle. These can be established factors in men’s follicular minaturization. Men who have receded and bald should take hair vitamin for the root as a supplement along with proper nutrition that they need to prevent follicle minaturization and restore and nourish the diminished follicles. This is the reason we suggest following our Hand-outs to decrease DHT and IGF-1. Most companies in the market sell hair vitamins without actually having seen the effects in the real world. Our products have been used on 1000's of patients successfully with our Worldwide Medical Clinics using them for thinning and diminished follicles, menopausal shedding and thinning, postpregnancy TE, Telogen effluvium, male pattern baldness, without the side effects of oral or topical medications.

How does Biotin restore the follicle?

Biotin is also known as a B-vit complex called Vitamin B7 or Vit H. Most companies that make biotin have very little understanding of the actual reason biotin works for the root. Dr. Shapiro after extensive research has shown that biotin controls blood sugar and that proper blood sugar levels decrease IGF-1 serum. Since Biotin is water soluble it has a very short half-life in the body so it passes through your body in a matter of hours. Proper daily dosing is essential which is the reason we have certain guidelines we have you follow. The SHAPIRO Chart and the Science Of Restoration with our Hair tablets will let you take back control of your recession and baldness. For those in need of further assistance, we suggest calling one of our Medical Worldwide clinics to further evaluate your thinning problems. These independent clinics have been trained by Dr. Shapiro to assess your underlying follicle problems. Biotin is in many foods and even chopped liver has a good dose of it. But for those of you who want the daily proper dosing of Biotin, we suggest taking our supplements with the maximum effective dose. There are foods that decrease the absorption of Biotin. Dr. Shapiro has extensively researched which foods have a positive impact on the root and which foods will stimulate a fuller shaft. Egg whites have been shown to inhibit absorption of Biotin. Even cooked egg whites can contain avidin which binds to Biotin and decreases the availability of the compound to the body. Because of Dr. Shapiro's extensive daily research even cooked egg whites can decrease Biotin absorption. So it is important to replace Biotin with a supplement that has the proper amounts and ratios.

Does Pumpkin seed give you healthy follicles?

Pumpkin seed is a natural DHT blocker and several studies have shown it to be quite effective in blocking the hormone that minaturizes follicles. Once the shaft and root are minaturized by the DHT molecule is can be irreversible. The shaft narrows and thins and the hair cycle shortens. The hair looks thin, limp and the hair starts to fall out. Pumpkin seed has been shown to decrease prostate problems which become enlarged from DHT. So pumpkin seed acts as a DHT blocker. Fortunately, there are no side effects of pumpkin seed as seen with the prescription oral medications. Many side effects of prescription DHT blocker oral medications are lack of sexual drive and decreased libido. Pumpkin seed has been shown to be effective in both men and women.

This study showed that "Based on blinded investigator assessments, treatment with PSO was superior to treatment with placebo with respect to growth at 12 and 24 weeks (P < 0.001, all comparisons)." There has been some controversy to the effectiveness of saw palmetto as a DHT blocker and several studies have shown that it is ineffective for BPH.

So Pumpkin seed in the above study has been shown to actually thicken the shaft and reversing the minaturization process.

Do our hair vitamins actually work?

Our tablets have treated 1000's of patients with all the vitamins and minerals to promote existing follicles. Using the proper ratio of B's and essential elements to supply the follicles and roots with the proper nutrients to nourish the underlying follicle. We have over 100 Worldwide clinics that support our products and have patients that have successfully been treated when conventional therapies have failed. Dr. Larry Shapiro has trained these Worldwide clinics to assess poor elongation and shedding and to screen for minaturization by removing the products that cause and accelerate the follicle which is shrinking. Using the Low Anabolic Profile the consumer can remove supplements that cause loss and poor density. Unlike any other product online we have made it clear to both clinics and patients that even with the most effective treatment, screening for aggravating anabolic products and eliminating them from your diet will increase the efficacy of our products.

Can a Natural hair vitamin for growth stop or decrease shedding?

Everyday stress can cause an increase in cortisol levels. This leads to an increase in IGF-1 serum which is a major factor in hair loss. Depleted adrenals from hormonal changes or from damaging follicles do to blow dryers, and keratin treatments can damage hair including the shaft. This can cause excessive breakage. Our tablets maintain a healthy and conditioned scalp by supplying essential nutrients to the follicle and shrinking shaft. Keeping the follicle in the elongation phase or anagen will allow your shaft to extend healthy and fuller. Age-related shedding or thinness from menopause or medications such as Beta Blockers or Statins for cholesterol can have an adverse impact on follicles. Trying to decrease shedding and breakage will require the daily usage of our products resulting in overcoming stressful events in life such as general surgery, plastic surgery or poor nutrition.

Are there side effects with our supplements?

If used properly our tablets for the follicle have very little side effects. Our Medical clinics have been trained to screen for these side effects but a consumer can easily review our labels for the allergy warnings such as iodine or taking sulfonamides. We suggest checking our product labels carefully and call our customer service.  And of course before starting any program check with your doctor. If you are allergic to shellfish then you might be allergic to iodine. Individuals tolerate products differently but we are here to answer your questions. are different. We do not recommend our product to pregnant or lactating women or children under 17 years old.

Will our tablets restore the root fast?

Our supplements work from the inside to nourish the follicle. Telogen Effluvium is a condition that disrupts the elongation cycle and can be caused by anemia, low thyroid, high blood sugar or other metabolic causes.

If these conditions are corrected the cortex in the follicle can still be disrupted so hair vitamins can correct the out of phase catagen cycle and restore it to anagen phase. But this can take 2  months, working inside the body to build up in the system, and typically shedding is reduced and it may take up to  6 months for maximum. Some cases may take longer if the underlying problems like blood sugar remain uncorrected. We suggest seeing your doctor to correct these problems.

The shaft is typically slower to restore since it grows at a very slow rate. The tablets nourish the diminished follicle and enter the bloodstream and once the attained growth is reached then many of our customers will use our treatment as a maintenance dose so that they remain at the desired density. Our products are drug-free and we use all NON-GMO ingredients which is extremely important since many companies use genetically modified ingredients and we suggest a natural alternative. We are free of MSG, fillers, artificial colors.

What hair vitamins promote the best anagen phase and slow shedding ?

Many people lack the proper nutrients in their diet to get proper, In fact, many people take products that cause shedding and thinness. In fact, some everyday foods cause shedding and hair damage. To get a well-balanced diet we suggest B vit, including Biotin, Niacin for shaft maintenance. And many minerals optimize the follicle development which is not provided by your multi-vitamin. So using a supplement with a balanced diet can optimize your scalp.

If you are not getting the proper nutrition in your daily diet, we suggest adding protein, nutrients, and minerals which can have a positive impact on the fullness. Our tablets are the only All Natural alternative supplements to promote existing fullness. Our product has all the essential nutrients properly balanced for optimal follicular and root maintenance.

Our products were developed with the maximum amount per serving of essential minerals and B-vits. These vitamins include Biotin( Vit H) and Niacin ( B3) for essential fast elongation. The proper ratio of B vits with Iodine and Zinc and natural botanicals such as Pumpkin seed, Silica, and Foti provide the essential nutrients you to maintain a well balanced daily nutrition for fullness. These nutrients promote healthy roots and will restore dull, lifeless thin shafts. Nourish your roots from within with our tablets. Physician developed and recommended.

Warning: Always consult with your physician before starting any nutritional supplement. These claims not supported by the FDA. Not intended to treat a disease. For normal hair minaturization. Keep away from children. Best used before expiration date.

How often should I take our hair tablets?

We recommend taking 1 tablet in the AM and 1 tablet in the PM. This gives you the best coverage of the nutrients all day long. And it gives you the maximum amount of B vits recommended along with the minerals that optimize the thickness.

We strongly recommend that you do not take any other hair supplements with our product especially taking extra Biotin since too much Biotin can decrease the results. We also suggest that you take our product for 3-6 months until the shaft looks the fullest and then take a maintenance dose of 2-4 times a week depending on density desired. If you are taking Help Hair loss supplements with our Hair Shake then we suggest taking 1 Shake daily and 1 Help Hair tablet (8-10 hours apart).
